Ask Your (Unofficial) Best Man: The Princess Bride

I have no idea if my girlfriend likes Princess cut vs. circle vs. marquee diamonds. How do I know which one to get?

Well, first things first, it’s called “round” not “circle”. But if you’re unsure about what cut she’ll prefer, you’ll need to do some research, and a little snooping. If you’re both aware that getting engaged is on the horizon, and you haven’t had “the talk” yet, look for any hints she might be dropping–a Pinterest board of engagement rings left open on her computer, for instance, or random comments about celebrity engagement rings peppered into the conversation. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open.

You could also try to side-step the issue completely if you have a family heirloom ring with which to propose. If you really sell the the sentiment and history behind the ring, she may overlook the fact that the diamond is not in the shape she was hoping for. t But go lightly here: if she really doesn’t like your family’s ring, you may still have to buy her a new one. Fortunately, you’ll be able to take her with you, now that you’ve already proposed. The important thing is to get something she wants to wear on her hand.
