Lost your ring when you buried it in the beach?  We love those kind of trainwreck stories. Tell us.

My wife loves being out on the water.  She loves boats, jetskis, and all manner of watercraft.  We hadn't done much of that in our time together, so I decide to change that on the night I was going to propose.  I chartered a sailboat that was going to take us out on Galveston Bay at sunset.  I bought a cooler that looked like a backpack and loaded it up with a bottle of champagne, ice, and 2 plastic flutes (no glass on the boat) that actually looked nice.  I told the boat captain what I was planning, and he told me he'd take care of me.  I paid in advance.

The dock was a good 45 minute drive from my house and I built enough time into our itinerary to stop for dinner at one of her favorite restaurants.  I did not build in enough time for traffic (thanks to construction), and the crappy directions our captain gave me.  All this led to us being about 10-15 minutes late.

In that time, the captain decided we weren't showing up and went home.  He called me once about 10 minutes before we were supposed to be there, but I didn't get the call.  I called him once we got there, and that's when he let me know that our trip was cancelled.  I don't remember the exact words I used upon hearing this, but I do know they were loud and not suitable for all ages.

Luckily, another charter service, run by an older married couple, took pity on me and found me a boat.  It wasn't the sailboat I wanted (it was owned and operated by a couple of grandparents who had their grandchildren on board) and it cost an extra $75, but it was a working boat that actually had a captain.

In the end it turned out fine, but for a good 45 minutes I was in panic mode and so angry I know she was questioning the wisdom of staying with me another week, forget the rest of our lives.  Luckily, she said yes anyway.  On the way back to the dock fireworks erupted in the night sky (since it was way past sunset at this point), and the timing was so perfect she thought I had planned that, too.

Ok, call it cheesy or cliché but I decided to propose to my fiancé on Valentine’s Day. My grand plan was to go out to dinner, and then drive to a scenic beach near by and propose there on the board walk. Now maybe I should have thought this through better but you know how hind sight works. Ultimately I waited too long to make the reservation for the dinner and that was almost the downfall of the whole plan as the only reservations available by that point were for 7:30-8:00pm (remember its winter and has been dark for hours). I accepted, the food was great but, our poor waitress was so slow that we waited an hour from the time we finished our meal to the time we got our dessert. By this point it was pushing 10pm and I in a panic told the waitress that we would have to take our dessert to go (which of course raised an eyebrow across the table). But I could not stop, full speed ahead! I got back in the car and we drove to the beach but, of course my fiancé did not know where we were going and in the ten minutes it took to get there she fell completely asleep. So we arrived and I attempted to rouse her and suggest we get out of the car and walk along the board walk. Now it’s approximately 10:30pm, completely dark (except for lights down the boardwalk), and hovering around 20 degrees and windy. She of course looks at me like I’m crazy and refuses. Now the game is up and I meekly suggest we exchange our Valentine gifts. Up to this point I never really considered that I might be nervous or become incapable of speaking but all the sudden it hit me like a ton of irrational bricks (what if she says no?) now I’m frantic. She as always gave me very thoughtful gifts and then looks at me expectantly. So I fumble in my pocket and awkwardly hand her the ring box and in a small voice that doesn’t sound like me at all asked “uhhhh, will you uhhmm, marry me?” She opens the box, looks at the ring, smiles and says “You know, I expected this last year”…So in my crazed mind that doesn’t translate and I dumbly repeat the question and she replies “of course I will”. Could have planned it better but, I couldn’t be happier and, well diamonds have a way of making any foul up seem charming in her eyes at least.

We were in Hawaii, she traveled in from Japan, and I traveled in from the east coast of the US.  We spent a couple days together, and then went to Germaine's Luau.  We were sitting at the table and I handed my camera to the couple across the table from us.  I then pulled out a fake ring, that could have been worn as a bracelet.

I gave her the choice between the gigantic paperweight glass ring or the real one, which was significantly smaller.   The couple got some great photos!

After coming home from 36 hours straight of work, I found an air mattress blown up on the floor with my pillows and blanket on it.....uh oh! I realized pretty quick that our god daughter was with us for the weekend, and with her in the bed was my 140# mastiff, so naturally I was stuck on the floor. On my pillow was a stuffed animal, that turned out to be a Baby Shrek toy....Apparently my reaction was not sufficient for Laura, because she jumped up from bed and whispered to me..."I have to talk to you!" Words, a man who is beaten and tired, need not hear. "Jimmy.......I am pregnant!" Ok, I said. Goodnight. "Are you upset?" I hear again whispered. Now I am a wise man, or so I thought, because I replied, "no baby, I am just exhausted."

Skip to 8 hours later and I wake up with the feeling that I had been smacked both mentally and physically. I shower and confront my soon to be "baby mama" with the questions of 8 hours earler. Yep she said..we are going to be parents......

9 months or so later, our daughter "P" was born, and I finally realize "true love." An idea is born.

I had two plans, labled "A" and "B," for my ever feared question pop. "A" was a two part plan, that involved a buddy who managed an equipment rental company, three flashing, programmable road signs, a 1 mile stretch of road, and the hope that she would take the desired route home from work. The idea was to place the signs 1/3 mile apart, and have them flash a message. #1 Her name in big flashy lights, #2 "WILL YOU" #3 "MARRY ME." 1 day before the attack, my buddy lost his job due to the economy, so plan "A" was out!

Plan "B" was thrown together spur of the moment at a local semi-pro baseball game. I had my proposal broadcast on the big screen. The announcer was very persistant in having a camera follow Laura around waiting for her response. Luckily for me and my pride, she said yes! We are still figuring out the details and the finances, but just by asking the question has gained me much ease around the house. Good Luck guys!

Planning?  What is this "planning?"  I got lucky and winged it...

So my fiancee already knew I'd gotten a ring (because she's anal-retentive enough to HAVE to know these things or I'll never get more than an hour of sleep again), but I refused to tell her a damn thing about how or when it would go down.  We were coming up on our anniversary, and already had a vacation planned to celebrate it.  So I figured somewhere on the vacation would be a good time to propose.

I was in touch with our cruise director (carribean cruise) and trying to work up a plan for something romantic to do.  Unfortunately, we were playing phone tag, and I was running out of time to actually put something together that wouldn't have me sleeping on the couch till my midlife crisis.  Luckily, we were in Disney for the day, so I walked up to guest services, and told them I wanted to propose on a ride. 

Surprisingly, they flipped out with joy.  I guess people don't really think of doing that, but they were falling all over themselves to help me out, set up a time to go on a specific ride, packed the line with people (I knew she'd say yes, so no worry there), and they turned the mike over to m e, and blared it out over the speakers.  My fiancee loves disney,. and wanted the propsal to be a spectacle, so it worked out beautifully.  And it didn't cost me an extra dime, since we were going to disney anyway, and I already had the ring.  Sometimes a little thinking outside the box does wonders.

As an engraver I get to participate in a small way in many proposals.  One of my favorites over the years was a dessert plate on which we etched the text of a proposal.  Our gentleman customer purchased two matching crystal dessert plates on which one we etched his proposal.  Arrangements were made with a restaurant in advance to place the dessert on the plate to where it would cover up the text.  After eating the dessert the text would begin to display and she would finally discover what that special evening was all about.  What is great about this example is that the plate then becomes a keepsake and an heirloom to be passed down through generations.
