A Very Recessiony Wedding: How the Economy Impacts Your Guest Lists

As newspapers continue to hook every possible story to the economy, The Boston Globe highlights another wedding issue that's impacted by the recession: the guest list. And, specifically, Save the Date cards.

What they don't mention is that this could be good news for you.

From Boston.com:

"The wedding guest list has been causing stress since "save the date" notices were chiseled in stone. But with the tough economy forcing couples to reduce the size of weddings, the tension over who to invite and who to cut is growing. The size of the average wedding has dropped to 139 guests this year, down from 145 in 2008 and 166 in 2007, according to the Wedding Report, Inc., an industry research firm in Arizona. Jitters over the economy and rising unemployment are so pervasive that even those with jobs, like Davis, fear spending lavishly on the big event. "You never know what's coming down the pike," she said."The average cost of a wedding was $21,814 last year, down from $28,704 in 2007. The price tag is expected to drop by another 10 percent this year, according to the Wedding Report."

Longtime readers of The Plunge (which, admittedly, includes no one) will know that the guest list is the one-and possibly only-cost area where the groom should roll up his sleeves and take a stand.

The takeaway?

If you can swing it, think about flouting convention and not sending out Save the Date notices, as it sets expectations in stone...when the economy might make your budget more fluid.
